Kristofers Knesis

Composer portfolio
Knesis (1991) is an artist, composer, and performer working with modular synthesis, AI, and generative systems. His practice focuses on sound as an evolving process shaped by chance, randomness, and the limits of control. Each performance — whether solo or with Normal Babyy — becomes a new configuration of possibilities. His compositions have also been featured in film and video-based exhibitions, where they extend this exploration of unpredictability into other forms.
Shoal / Sēklis (2025)
Generative open-duration electronic sound piece. Six synthesizer tracks form a ~7-second sequence that repeats eternally, but chance dictates which steps are triggered. When the ear picks up the pattern, it fills in the gaps. The piece is random and nonsensical; the listener makes sense of it, or doesn’t.

“The sound piece Shoal is a series of noises. It evokes not the presence of the sea, but its absence – it seems that now the empty, dry space is filled only with scraping, rubbing, clanking, and other sounds that arise when there is no lubricating moisture or sound‑dampening, liquid‑filled volume.” – Gundega Evelone, in a review for the exhibition.
The piece was created for the exhibition Unscheduled Sandy Meeting II. A 15-minute excerpt was exhibited throughout the exhibition. The open-duration version was performed at its opening.
