Apophenia (2023)
Project Type
Performance
Apophenia (English: the erroneous perception of patterns or correlations in random or unconnected phenomena, events, or data) is a contemplation on perceived randomness, perceived structure, perceived cause, and perceived effect.
We recognize patterns not because they are there, but because we are looking.
Randomness repeated is not random. Structure disrupted is structure no longer.
Repetition invites prediction; deviation invites doubt. And in between, we assign meaning.
Two agents of randomness and structure—sound and movement—act as cause and effect in what occurs during the performance. But which is which?
Correlation does not imply causation. But sometimes, it is.
